Hoy, por enésima ocasión, en coferencia de prensa a lado del Primer Ministro de Iraq, Ibrahim Jaafari, el presidente de Estados Unidos, George Bush, insistió que los rebeldes iraquíes serán derrotados.

US President George W Bush has insisted that the "violent and ruthless" insurgency in Iraq will be defeated.

After talks in Washington with Iraqi PM Ibrahim Jaafari, Mr Bush said the political progress that was being made in the country would lead to victory.

He said US troops would eventually withdraw "with honour", but declined to set a timetable for withdrawal.

Pero mientras G. Bush reitera una y otra vez la "victoria" sobre los rebeldes, su gobierno es fuertemente criticado por las acciones bélicas en Iraq precisamente, y por el trato a los prisioneros en el campo de concentración de Guantánamo, Cuba.

La Cruz Roja ya había alertado sobre las vejaciones y torturas que los prisioneros, en su mayoría originarios del Medio Oriente, sufrían en Guantánamo. The New York Times publica hoy que también los médicos están involucrados en las "técnicas" de interrogación. "El papel de estos psiquiatras y psicólogos consistía en estudiar los historiales médicos de los detenidos para, posteriormente, aconsejarles sobre "cómo aumentar sus niveles de estrés y aprovechar sus miedos" con el fin de "inducirles a cooperar" durante los interrogatorios", informa El País.

Military doctors at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, have aided interrogators in conducting and refining coercive interrogations of detainees, including providing advice on how to increase stress levels and exploit fears, according to new, detailed accounts given by former interrogators.

The accounts, in interviews with The New York Times, come as mental health professionals are debating whether psychiatrists and psychologists at the prison camp have violated professional ethics codes. The Pentagon and mental health professionals have been examining the ethical issues involved.

Hoy, en Estambul, The World Tribunal (WTI) acusó al gobierno de Estados Unidos de causar más muertes en Iraq que las provocadas por Saddam Hussein. Además, pidieron que se les de un trato de críminales de guerra a líderes como G. Bush, Tony Blair, Silvio Berlusconi, John Howard, y demás personas involucradas en la guerra ilegal en Iraq.

"With two wars and 13 years of criminal sanctions, the United States have been responsible for more deaths in Iraq than Saddam Hussein," Larry Everest, a journalist, told hundreds of anti-war activists gathered in Istanbul.

The tribunal has for the past two years been gathering what it says is evidence that the war launched in March 2003 to oust Saddam was illegal, and it has also been gathering evidence of exactions allegedly committed by coalition troops.

Roy told the gathering here: "The evidence collated in this tribunal should ... be used by the International Criminal Court -- whose jurisdiction the United States does not recognize -- to try as war criminals
George Bush, Tony Blair, John Howard, Silvio Berlusconi, and all those government officials, army generals, and corporate CEOs who participated in this war and now benefit from it."
