El gobierno "libre y democrático" de George W. Bush inició hoy su segundo mandato con ideales, promesas, mentiras, omisiones, represiones, "libertades" y galas ostentosas celebrando no se que.

Para empezar su segundo mandato, el New York Times y el Washington Post criticaron el discurso del presidente Bush. Ya no se escucharon los habituales "Iraq," "Afghanistan," "Sept. 11" o "terrorism.", ahora, cambiando la estrategia de miedo, los "tiranos" tendrán que someterse a la fuerza estadounidense por la lucha de la "libertad".

Estados Unidos ha mantenido una política de promover y apoyar el surgimiento de movimientos e instituciones democráticas en todos los países y en todas las sociedades con el objetivo final de poner fin a la tiranía en el mundo. Eso no deja al margen, en primer lugar, a las armas, nosotros nos defenderemos, nosotros y nuestros aliados, por la fuerza de las armas si es necesario.

El lavado de cerebro a los ciudadanos americanos funcionó para ganar las elecciones utlizando palabras como "Saddam", "Osama", "terror", "weapons of mass destruction", etc., que quedaron grabadas en el subconciente de los votantes. Ahora la estrategia cambia, la nueva palabra mágica es "freedom" o libertad, utlizada más de 25 veces según el New York Times.

But stand how, and when, and where? When Mr. Bush warned that "the leaders of governments with long habits of control need to know to serve your people, you must learn to trust them," did he mean to endorse plebiscites in Saudi Arabia or Egypt that could produce anti-American governments? He invoked the view of the former Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky that rights "are secured by free dissent and the participation of the governed," but he did not spell out what that principle means for day-to-day relations with Russia, China or Pakistan.

President Bush's soaring rhetoric yesterday that the United States will promote the growth of democratic movements and institutions worldwide is at odds with the administration's increasingly close relations with repressive governments in every corner of the world.

Some of the administration's allies in the war against terrorism -- including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Uzbekistan -- are ranked by the State Department as among the worst human rights abusers. The president has proudly proclaimed his friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin while remaining largely silent about Putin's dismantling of democratic institutions in the past four years. The administration, eager to enlist China as an ally in the effort to restrain North Korea's nuclear ambitions, has played down human rights concerns there, as well.
